Mr. Simms bought a small broom and brush enterprise with funds as a Veteran from the American Civil War with his bonus and soldiers’ back pay. This company relocated in 1872 to Saint John, New Brunswick. This was a rather busy port city at this point, famous around the globe for its’ shipbuilding contributions.

Thomas Simms was a talented man who endured through several hardships. Sadly, he outlived two wives and had a disastrous factory fire to cope with. He continued to strive forward despite these disasters and forged his organization ahead.

Simms was an enthusiastic traveller. During the 1900s, he was one of the initial brush manufacturers to visit China to exclusively purchase bristles. He was involved in the lay missionary movement. As a testament to his commitment and generous efforts, the Simms Memorial Baptist Church can be found in India with a solid congregation.

After the founding father passed away in 1908, Lewis Wesley Simms took over operating the Company. Over the next half a century, Lewis Simms presided as the President. LW had a dynamic presence and strong personality. He expanded the business his father began from local to countrywide. Lewis produced automated brush-making equipment and publicized it, changing the industry forever. Inside the Canadian corporate environment, he obtained national prominence. Mr. Simms became the president of the Canadian Manufacturing Association in addition to the Canadian Chamber of Commerce.

He was posthumously inducted into the Industry Hall of Fame of the Canadian Hardware Houseware Manufacturing Association plus the New Brunswick Hall of Fame. Simms was really a visionary and a master of employee relations. His organized and efficient approach allowed this company to flourish into the success it is today.

The founder’s great-grandson, Thomas Stockwell Simms III carries on growing the company’s solid integrity, building on the traditions that founded the business. Establishing strong leadership, creative and seasoned employees and bright merchandising, the plant acquired quality equipment to supply innovative new products.

Saint John, NB is home to the company’s sales, customer service and marketing at head office. The business manufacturing area and warehouse hub can be found in Erin, Ontario. The prosperity of the company may be attributed to reliable quality, supreme service and positive business ethics.
